Il fatto che non sia stato completato all'epoca si deve alla prematura scomparsa dell'allora ventitreenne River Phoenix, in seguito ad un'overdose. Per questo motivo la produzione decise di denunciare la madre dell'attore per 6 milioni di dollari per aver tenuto all'oscuro tutti dei problemi di droga del figlio. Un giovane vedovo di nome Boy (River Phoenix) vive come un eremita in un sito di test nucleari, aspettando la fine del mondo mentre costruisce bambole che crede dotate di poteri magici. Boy finisce con l'aiutare una coppia (Jonathan Pryce e Judy Davis) quando la loro macchina ha un guasto mentre stanno attraversando il deserto (che, in base alla location del set, è quello - non meglio precisato - dello Utah, 300 miglia a sud di Salt Lake City) tenendoli poi prigionieri perché desidera creare un mondo migliore con la donna.

SYNOPSIS:

Dealing with nuclear testing and its long-lasting deadly effects, the story portrays Boy, a young widower living in the desert on a nuclear testing site. Living as a hermit,he waits for the end of the world carving Katchina dolls that he believes have magical powers. While traveling on a "second" honeymoon across the Arizona desert,the car of a Hollywood jet-set couple breaks down. They are rescued by Boy, who holds them prisoners because he desires the woman and wants to create a better world with her.

LONG SYNOPSIS:

Boy, a young widower with native American roots, lives in a desert in the USA contaminated by nuclear tests. In this desolate place, surrounded by katchina dolls which the indigenous population believes possess magical powers, he awaits the end of the world. His refuge is suddenly invaded by Harry and Buffy, a couple second honeymooning in an attempt to save their marriage. When their Bentley breaks down in the middle of nowhere, Boy offers to help. But then, hoping to cross over into a better world with Buffy, he starts treating them like prisoners. When Dark Blood’s leading actor River Phoenix died suddenly ten days before the end of the shoot in 1993, the film’s insurance company became the owner of the unfinished material. Years later, director George Sluizer managed to save his footage from being destroyed. In January 2012 he decided to finish the film by reading aloud off-screen the missing scenes from the screenplay. The resulting work is an existentialist latter-day Western which derives much of its evocative power from the presence of its leading man, who was himself teetering on the brink of death.
