Sinossi:

Boston, fine anni sessanta. Il tredicenne Charles Nordstadt detto "Chuck" vive con la madre divorziata quattro volte e le due sorellastre. Suo padre, alcolizzato e insano di mente, ha abbandonato la famiglia e si è suicidato in un ospedale psichiatrico. Trascurato in famiglia, Chuck tenta il riscatto decidendo di iscriversi alla prestigiosa accademia militare di West Point, la stessa che aveva frequentato suo padre. Per entrarci deve superare un difficile esame e così chiede aiuto a Justin McLeod, un ex insegnante con la parte destra del volto sfigurata e altre ustioni sul torace, che vive solo ed emarginato da tutti in una sorta di villa-castello nel Maine. Justin McLeod accetta di diventare il suo maestro così i due diventano amici e iniziano a frequentarsi.

Il volto sfregiato dell'ex professore Justin McLeod è fonte di chiacchiere malevole da parte degli abitanti del villaggio, anche se nessuno sa che cosa sia successo. Così un giorno, McLeod confessa a Chuck la verità: il suo volto è stato sfigurato a causa di un incidente stradale che ha anche provocato la morte di un suo studente. Chuck svela a tutti che cosa è successo e quando la madre scopre che Chuck prende lezioni dal professor McLeod, lo accusa di aver molestato Chuck; nel villaggio infatti si è sparsa la voce che l'incidente sia stato causato dal fatto che McLeod stesse molestando il suo studente mentre erano in auto.

Chuck si confronta aspramente con McLeod, il quale confessa di non aver mai molestato lo studente morto, benché sia stato condannato a tre anni di carcere per omicidio colposo. Rinnovandosi le accuse di pedofilia McLeod non può più frequentare Chuck e i due smettono di vedersi, nonostante Chuck continui a volergli bene. Finita l'estate, Chuck riesce a superare l'esame grazie agli insegnamenti di McLeod e un giorno fugge dall'Accademia per andare a trovarlo ma scopre che questi ha lasciato la sua casa, lasciandogli una lettera di ringraziamento e una promessa di amicizia eterna. Quattro anni dopo, Chuck si diploma con ottimi voti e, mentre festeggia con gli altri studenti, riconosce sullo sfondo una figura che si allontana: Justin McLeod.

Storyline:

In 1968, Justin McLeod has been living an isolated existence as a painter for seven years, after a car accident that disfigured his face.

Chuck Norstadt is a young boy who endures a contentious relationship with his academically brilliant sisters and their mother. One day, Chuck meets McLeod on a ferry when McLeod witnesses Chuck in an act of vandalism. Chuck needs a tutor to help him pass a military academy's entrance exam that he had failed earlier. Upon discovering that McLeod is a teacher, Chuck persuades him to become his tutor. While he is initially baffled by McLeod's unorthodox methods, the two eventually develop a close friendship.

Chuck keeps his daily meetings with McLeod a secret to avoid being scorned for associating with a disfigured man whose past is shrouded in mystery. Ultimately, Mrs. Norstadt learns that her son has been visiting McLeod. She and the rest of the town convince themselves that McLeod is sexually molesting Chuck, despite Chuck's denials. Chuck researches McLeod's car accident, which involved the death of another boy, thus causing McLeod's fear of another attachment.

Chuck confronts McLeod and learns that the youth who was killed in the car crash was his student. Consequently, McLeod was unjustly branded a pedophile, was convicted of involuntary manslaughter, and served three years in prison. Once his relationship with Chuck is openly known, McLeod is run out of town and ordered by the authorities not to have any contact with Chuck, who enters the military academy.

At mail call, he is given back the letters he had sent to McLeod, which were marked undeliverable. Chuck returns to McLeod's house only to find it empty except for a painting he had done of Chuck that summer and a letter explaining that McLeod has moved on. He wishes the best for Chuck in his academic goals, also thanking him for the gift of grace he'd been given. Afterwards, Chuck is shown graduating from the military academy as his family looks on. He sees a familiar figure in the distance and recognizes it as his "faceless" tutor. They silently greet each other.

Chuck (Nick Stahl): Signore, lei si è mai chiesto perché l'uomo e la donna sono attratti l'uno dall'altro?
McLeod: Si chiama sesso Nordstadt e, non è materia d'esame.
Chuck: No, non intendevo questo. Volevo dire, perché è tanto difficile, per quale motivo non riescono sempre a stare insieme?
McLeod: Ah, vedi, non mi sono mai considerato un buon consigliere di innamorati infelici.
Chuck: Non è mai stato sposato?
McLeod: Sì sono stato sposato, tanto tempo fa. Questo tuttavia non mi qualifica, non saprei dare una risposta valida alla tua domanda, non saprei.
McLeod: D'accordo, vuoi la risposta lunga o quella corta?
Chuck: Quella corta!
McLeod: Bene! Il problema è l'acqua. Le donne, mediamente ne trattengono il 5% in più degli uomini, il che le sottopone a differenti forze di gravità. Ehi, non sei obbligato a credermi, vatti a leggere Newton. Lo troverai.
