Sinossi:
Katherine Loewe (Laura Dern), una scrittrice di grande successo, si reca in un rifugio per scrittori in un'esotica località montana marocchina per finire il suo ultimo romanzo letterario. Anche se normalmente prolifica, si ritrova in difficoltà a causa di un litigio con il suo compagno, uno scultore, che vuole che lei lasci la sua idilliaca casa di campagna dopo aver vissuto con lui per quattordici anni.
Tra gli altri ospiti c'è l'insicura e molto più giovane Lily Kemp (Diana Silvers), il cui romanzo d'esordio ha ricevuto un successo di critica e finanziario, e che ha chiesto al suo fidanzato direttore finanziario, Owen Brophy (Liam Hemsworth), di accompagnarla.
Mentre la Katherine più anziana vuole solo trovare un posto tranquillo dove scrivere, Lily si gode la socievolezza e l'attenzione che riceve dagli altri scrittori, in particolare da Rafih Abdo, un suo fan che la esorta ad approfittare del ritiro. Owen, nel frattempo, ha difficoltà ad adattarsi ed è distratto dal suo lavoro impegnativo, che gli richiede di rispondere a frequenti telefonate ad alta pressione su un affare immobiliare negli Stati Uniti.
Dopo che i rubinetti della stanza di Katherine smettono di funzionare, si perde mentre cerca acqua potabile e incontra Owen che la aiuta a ritrovare la strada per tornare nella sua stanza.
Il giorno seguente, Lily e gli altri scrittori scelgono di rimanere al resort per parlare con un giornalista, mentre Owen e Katherine approfittano di un'escursione pre-programmata in una città locale. I due trascorrono il pomeriggio insieme condividendo intuizioni e osservazioni sui viaggi. Il loro taxi si guasta sulla via del ritorno, ma vengono accolti da una famiglia locale per una cena e una ricreazione cucinate in casa, che entrambi apprezzano, nonostante l'inconveniente.
Al ritorno, Owen è deluso dal fatto che Lily abbia fatto uso di alcol e hashish con gli altri scrittori e si rifiuta di fare sesso con lei; quando le dice di aver passato la giornata con Katherine, Lily è subito gelosa e si sente rifiutata.
Nei giorni successivi, Katherine trova un piccolo ripostiglio in cui lavorare e Owen visita Lily, che invita Rafih a tenerle compagnia mentre Owen risponde a ripetute chiamate di lavoro. Sebbene Owen tenti di rendere felice Lily sostenendola, viene comunque umiliato pubblicamente da lei durante un gioco serale di sciarade e deriso da lei per la sua mancanza di conoscenza letteraria.
Katherine lo incontra in seguito e gli solleva il morale discutendo dei suoi successi passati nello sport e commiserandosi per la difficoltà del suo lavoro; lui, a sua volta, condivide la sua ammirazione per la sua lunga lista di successi, confessando di averla "cercata su Google", e i due trascorrono la serata condividendo dettagli personali.
Dopo il ritorno, l'uso di alcol e droghe di Lily aumenta, portandola a tornare a casa diverse notti, nuda e sballata. Dopo una rumorosa discussione al riguardo, Owen beve molto e fa un passaggio a Katherine, che lei rifiuta gentilmente, citando la loro differenza di età , da cui si sente insultato.
La mattina seguente, Lily tenta di riconciliarsi con Owen, ma viene ostacolata da una foto inviata da Rafih, che rivela che i due hanno dormito insieme. Owen la lascia, poi trova Katherine e le chiede di unirsi a lui in un viaggio lontano dal resort.
Katherine e Owen viaggiano insieme, e diventano romanticamente intimi, e lui rivela di aver rinunciato al suo lavoro, che ha trovato sempre più moralmente compromettente. Durante una gita in una spiaggia locale entrambi parlano di vivere insieme in Marocco, ma vengono interrotti quando il laptop di Katherine contenente l'unica copia del suo romanzo viene rubato. Avendo perso due anni di lavoro ed essendo arrabbiata con se stessa, non riesce a farsi confortare da Owen, lo definisce una "distrazione" e parte immediatamente per New York.
Diversi mesi dopo, Katherine finisce un romanzo diverso e questo diventa un altro successo quando viene pubblicato l'estate successiva. Per coincidenza, Owen la incontra in un bar del centro, salutandola calorosamente prima di andarsene con i suoi amici. Katherine gli corre dietro, confessa di aver cercato di trovarlo diverse volte ma di non aver avuto il coraggio di farlo, e si scusa per questo, e per averlo definito una distrazione. Gli dice anche che il suo nuovo libro è stato ispirato dal suo incontro con lui e che ha usato la sua scrittura come un modo per tenerlo a mente. Owen la bacia.
Storyline:
Katherine Loewe, a highly successful writer, travels to a writer’s retreat in an exotic Moroccan mountain resort to finish her latest literary novel. Though normally prolific, she finds herself struggling due to a falling-out with her partner, a sculptor, who wants her to move out of his idyllic farmhouse home after she has lived with him for fourteen years.
Other guests include the insecure and much younger Lily Kemp, whose debut novel has received critical and financial success, and who has asked her finance manager boyfriend, Owen Brophy, to accompany her.
While older Katherine only wants to find a quiet place to write, Lily enjoys the sociability and the attention she receives from the other writers, especially Rafih Abdo, a fan of hers who urges her to take advantage of the retreat. Owen, meanwhile, finds it difficult to fit in and is distracted by his demanding job, which requires him to take frequent high-pressure phone calls about a real-estate deal in the USA.
After the taps in Katherine's room stop working, she gets lost while searching for drinking water, and meets Owen who helps her find her way back to her room.
The following day, Lily and the other writers opt to stay at the resort to speak to a reporter, while Owen and Katherine take advantage of a pre-planned excursion to a local town. The two spend the afternoon together sharing insights and observations about travel. Their taxi breaks down on the way back, but they are treated by a local family to a home-cooked dinner and recreation, which they both enjoy, despite the inconvenience.
Upon returning, Owen is disappointed that Lily has been using alcohol and hashish with the other writers and refuses to have sex with her; when he tells her he has spent the day with Katherine, Lily is immediately jealous and feels rejected.
Over the next several days, Katherine finds a small utility room to work in and Owen sightsees with Lily, who invites Rafih along to keep her company while Owen takes repeated business calls. Though Owen attempts to make Lily happy by supporting her, he is nonetheless publicly humiliated by her during an evening game of charades and mocked by her for his lack of literary knowledge.
Katherine meets with him afterwards and lifts his spirits by discussing his past successes in sports and commiserating at the difficulty of his job; he, in turn, shares his admiration of her long list of accomplishments, confessing that he "Googled" her, and the two spend the evening sharing personal details.
After Owen contracts food poisoning, Lily leaves him for several days on an extended excursion into the Sahara. Katherine tells him that her sculptor partner want to break up with her because he finds her unbearable while she's writing a novel; Owen encourages her by saying that he appreciates her insight and self-discovery in her process.
After returning, Lily’s drinking and drug use increase, leading her to stumble home several nights, naked and high. After a loud argument about it, Owen drinks heavily and makes a pass at Katherine, which she gently rebuffs, citing their age difference, which he feels insulted by.
The following morning, Lily attempts to reconcile with Owen, but is stymied by a photo texted by Rafih, revealing that the two have been sleeping together. Owen leaves her, then finds Katherine and asks her to join him on a road trip away from the resort.
Katherine and Owen travel together, and become romantically intimate, and he reveals that he has given up his job, which he has increasingly found morally compromising. During a trip to a local beach they both talk about living in Morocco together, but are interrupted when Katherine's laptop containing the only copy of her novel is stolen. Having lost two years' worth of work and angry with herself, she is unable to be comforted by Owen, calls him a “distractionâ€, and departs immediately for New York.
Several months later, Katherine finishes a different novel and this becomes another success when published the following summer. By coincidence, Owen runs into her at a downtown bar, greeting her warmly before leaving with his friends. Katherine runs after him, confesses that she tried to find him several times but lacked the courage to follow through, and apologizes for that, and for calling him a distraction. She also tells him that her new book was inspired by her encounter with him and that she used her writing as a way to keep him in mind. Owen kisses her.

D’altra parte, che anche in Lonely Planet non si miri del tutto all’imprevedibile, è chiaro fin dagli inizi, ma quasi sorprendono modi e tempi in cui si approda a destinazione: dopo una serie di incomprensioni, qualche disavventura - come il
furto del libro che Katherin/Dern stava scrivendo - una lunga pausa di lontananza, con il ritorno ognuno alla propria vita e… un nuovo libro più tardi, Swing Route - dal gergo del footoball, parafrasando il concetto “fidarsi del proprio istinto per prendere una decisione†- … i nodi rimasti si scioglieranno come neve al sole. Poteva essere altrimenti?
